Audio Mixing refers to the process of combining multi-track audio recordings into one final mix, both in a creative and musical way. A procedure of proper gain staging, checking levels for sufficient headroom, panning, gating, De-Essing, transient design, EQ, compression, saturation, limiting, reverb, delays, special FX, automation and combining all these elements into a well balanced stereo mix.

FILE PREPARATION CHECKLIST!

All sessions get mixed in Pro Tools 2019. No matter which DAW you use like Pro Tools, Logic, Cubase, Nuendo, Reaper, Live etc. use this guide to assist you in preparing your session files.
  • Label your tracks! This is a vital step to identify the tracks.
  • Clean up your tracks! Clean up unwanted noises, bad edits, pop & clicks etc.
  • Pitch & Timing corrections! Pitch & timing correction is time consuming, not really a part of the mix process but can be done on request.
  • Turn off ALL processing & effects! If you performed some track processing (eq, comp, fx etc.) please turn them off before you render/consolidate the tracks. If the processing is critically important to the mix, please render & name both versions. (e.g. Kick Dry & Kick EQ-COMP, Synth Dry & Synth Delay etc.)
  • Consolidating Tracks, aka. Rendering: Regardless of what DAW you use, the files required to mix are the tracks from start to finish, all audio tracks need to start at the same time.
  • Select all tracks from start to finish. (Consolidate tracks, render or bounce in place etc.) This step is essential for lining up the audio files in the mix session timeline.
  • Exporting audio files: After the tracks have been rendered, export the audio files. In Pro Tools use “save copy as”, and activate the tab with “selected tracks only“. Choose the preferred format, drive location and hit save. In other DAW’s use the export files command. In all scenarios save the files in a folder named “ARTIST-SONGTITLE“, zip the folder for easy transferring the project files.
  • Choose the right Formats: (e.g. WAV, AIFF, 16/24/32bits bit-depth, 44.1Khz, 48kHz sample-rate up to 24bit/192kHz.) Typically the export format is the format that the session was recorded in. MP3’s are not accepted or suited for mixing!
Should you have any further questions, let me know when we discuss your session!

FILE TRANSFER CHECKLIST!

  • Deliver your project files via CD/DVD/USB, portable HD or through online file transfer services like WeTransfer.
  • WeTransfer offers up to 2GB of free file-sharing per transfer.
  • For multiple mix sessions, place your files in separate zipped project folders. (e.g. ARTIST – SONG)
  • Should it be that 2GB provides insufficient space per song, you can subsequently create 2 or more audio file folders to deliver your files. Alternatively a WeTransfer Plus account allows you to transfer up to 20GB in one go, the downside is a signup and per year @ 120€ or 12€ p.m.
  • Other file transfer services for the audio & video industry like Avid cloud collaboration platform.

It’s always a delight doing a job well to the best of my abilities with the tools at hand in any given condition.
